Interac Email Money Transfer - FAQ

What is an Interac Email Money Transfer?
An Interac Email Money Transfer is a transfer sent directly from your personal bank account to anyone with an email address and personal bank account at a Canadian financial institution.

Internet email carries the notice of the pending transfer and instructions to collect the money, while the banks provide the ability to move the money securely using reliable payment networks already in place.

CertaPay Inc. has made the Interac Email Money Transfer service available to member banks. Currently there are five Canadian banks participating in the service, including BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, RBC Royal Bank, Scotiabank and TD Canada Trust. Although customers who deal with non-participating financial institutions cannot send an Interac Email Money Transfer, they can receive an Interac Email Money Transfer using the CertaPay Transfer site and arrange for the money to be deposited using an Electronic Funds Transfer.

How much does it cost?
To send an Interac Email Money Transfer, the fee is $1.50 plus any applicable account transaction fees.

To receive and deposit an Interac Email Money Transfer using TD Canada Trust EasyWeb, it's free. However, if you choose to provide instructions to CertaPay to deposit the money into your account using an electronic transfer, a service fee may be deducted by CertaPay.

Is this method of transferring money secure?
Yes. Regarding security, there are some very important facts to remember.

How much money can I send and receive using the Interac Email Money Transfer service?
The chart below outlines how much you can send and receive during specific time frames:

Rolling 24-hour period You can send up to $1,000 CAD and also receive up to $10,000 CAD in the same time period.
Rolling 7-day period You can send up to $3,000 CAD and also receive up to $25,000 CAD in the same time period.
Rolling 30-day period You can send up to $7,000 CAD and also receive up to $50,000 CAD in the same time period.

Can I send or receive an Interac Email Money Transfer in currencies other than Canadian dollars?
At this time, no. It is an enhancement we look forward to adding to the service in the future.

What do I need to start using the Interac Email Money Transfer service?

How much time does the recipient have to collect an Interac Email Money Transfer?
An Interac Email Money Transfer has an expiry date of 30 days from the date it was sent.

If a recipient does not collect an Interac Email Money Transfer, what happens to the money?
If a recipient does not collect an Interac Email Money Transfer within 30 days, the transfer will expire. An email will be sent to the sender to explain the transfer has expired and instructions to reclaim the money and deposit it back into his/her account.

Can I send/receive an Interac Email Money Transfer by telephone, at my branch, or at an ABM?
No. The Interac Email Money Transfer service is only available online using TD Canada Trust EasyWeb.

Can I call EasyLine to add a recipient to my personal Recipient List, or action an Interac Email Money Transfer on my behalf?
Generally, no. The Interac Email Money Transfer service is a self-serve function available within EasyWeb only. An EasyLine Banking Specialist can inquire and assist you with your Interac Email Money Transfers - but cannot update your Recipient List or send, receive, decline, cancel, or reclaim an Interac Email Money Transfer on your behalf.

If there is a communication or system failure within EasyWeb at the time you are completing an Interac Email Money Transfer transaction, an error message will appear and direct you to call EasyLine. In this situation only, the EasyLine Banking Specialist can action the Interac Email Money Transfer transaction.

After confirming you have entered the correct email address for the recipient, there are a few other reasons why the email notification may not be delivered to the recipient:

It is important to tell the recipient that the email notification will appear as coming from you, but the 'From' address is 'notify@payments.certapay.com'. If the recipient needs to contact their Internet Service Provider, it is important that s/he indicates this 'From' address as the one that needs to be accepted for delivery.

Can I use the Interac Email Money Transfer service with my Small Business account?
No. Business customers cannot send or receive Interac Email Money Transfers. At this time, the Interac Email Money Transfer service is available to personal accountholders only.
