What is the purpose of the Security Question?
The Security Question plays a key role in the security of your Interac e-Transfer. It is used to ensure the identity of the recipient (the person receiving the money), and protect the transfer from being intercepted by someone other than the intended recipient.

Prior to collecting the money, the recipient must correctly answer the Security Question. The answer can be compared to a shared secret between the sender and the recipient. Therefore, if someone other than the recipient tries to deposit the money, s/he will be unable to answer the Security Question, and ultimately unable to collect the money.

If the question cannot be answered correctly, the sender will be notified via email and advised to deposit the money back into his/her account.

Who is responsible for creating an effective Security Question?
As explained in the Cardholder and Electronic Financial Services Terms and Conditions, the sender of the Interac e-Transfer is responsible for creating an effective Security Question and Answer for each recipient.

For complete details, please refer to the Cardholder and Electronic Financial Services Terms and Conditions, '15. Interac e-Transfers'.

How do I create an effective Security Question?
When adding a new recipient to your Recipient List, you will create a Security Question and Answer for that particular person. The Security Question plays a key role in security. It is very important to select an effective Security Question and Answer.

Here are some important Do's and Don'ts to assist in creating a Security Question and Answer:

How do I inform the recipient of the Security Question and Answer?
To confirm the recipient knows the correct answer to the Security Question, contact him/her in person or by phone. Please do not include the Security Question and Answer in an email to the recipient, or in the 'Message' field when sending an Interac e-Transfer.

Can I use the same Security Question and Answer for all my recipients?
To ensure the identity of each recipient, we recommend that you create a different Security Question and Answer for each recipient.

I can't remember the Security Question and/or Answer for my recipient. Where can I find this information?
The Security Question for each recipient is available on your personal Recipient List. Select My Accounts > Payments & Transfers in the top menu bar and then click Maintain Recipient List in the left sub-menu bar. The next page will display each recipient available on your list and the Security Question you have created.

You will notice the Answer is not displayed. The Answer is displayed only at the time of adding a recipient to your personal list. It is not available to view within EasyWeb, and an EasyLine Telephone Banking Specialist does not have access to this information.

If you cannot remember the Answer, update the recipient's details, specifically the Security Question and Answer. To do this, select the recipient and click the 'Modify' button. Also, please remember to tell the recipient the new Security Question and/or Answer.

I am using Interac e-Transfer to pay for an online auction item and the seller has suggested a Security Question and Answer. Can I choose a different Security Question and Answer?
Yes, the seller has merely suggested a Security Question and Answer. If you, as the sender of the Interac e-Transfer, are not comfortable with this Security Question and Answer, please create a different Security Question and Answer. Then contact the seller and tell him/her the new Security Question and Answer.

It is important to remember that as the sender of the Interac e-Transfer, it is your responsibility to ensure the Interac e-Transfer is secure, which you accomplish by creating an effective Security Question and Answer.
