EasyWeb Tip of the Week

Learn about some important actions you can take to help protect yourself from fraud

Here are some important actions you can take to help protect yourself from fraud:

1) Create a secure password for EasyWeb

  • Use a combination of letters and numbers
  • Do not use passwords that are easy for others to guess such as birthdays, family names or telephone numbers
  • Disable AutoComplete or other memorized password functions on your browser. Saving passwords on your computer or on the Internet increases the risk of identity theft.
  • Do not disclose your password(s) to anyone, especially online
  • Change your password regularly

2) Change your PIN regularly

  • You can change your PIN at the ATM or at any TD Canada Trust branch
  • Be sure to memorize your PIN. Never write it down and never share your PIN with family or friends. Also, never reveal your PIN over the phone.
  • When you’re selecting a new PIN, avoid your birthday, phone number, or a significant number that others might guess

3) Protect your personal information

  • Ensure the safety of personal information such as your social insurance number, driver’s license number, or credit card numbers
  • Only provide personal information when you have initiated the contact or you are dealing with someone you know. Also, be sure to keep your bills and financial statements in a safe place. When you no longer need them, shred your personal documents before recycling.
  • Carefully review your bank statements and credit card statements as soon as you receive them. If you suspect unauthorized use, contact us immediately.

4) Always use up-to-date anti-virus software from a reputable vendor to protect your computing environment from harmful software.

  • Most anti-virus programs include an auto-update feature that enables the program to download profiles of new viruses so that it can check for them as soon as they are discovered.
  • Don't forget to register new anti-virus software immediately, and sign up for automatic notification of product updates if available.
  • Look for a package that also comes with anti-malware and anti-spyware software.
  • Installing a personal firewall can also help protect your system from hackers.
