| 2. | How do I move my money back and forth between my TD Canada Trust Canadian dollar and TD Waterhouse Bank U.S. dollar accounts? |
Simply call 1-888-327-9962 to transfer money between your TD Canada Trust and your TD Waterhouse Bank accounts. You'll receive automatic conversion of Canadian dollars to and from U.S. funds at a very competitive rate.
Any transfer between accounts requested by 6:30PM ET of a business day will be processed the same business day. Transfers requested after 6:30PM ET of a business day will be processed on the next business day.
| 3. | What happens if I mail a check in Canadian funds to TD Waterhouse Bank for deposit? |
We request that you please do not send Canadian funds because your check will be returned. Instead, you should deposit checks in Canadian funds to your TD Canada Trust account and call 1-888-327-9962 to transfer funds to your U.S. bank account.
| 4. | Are there any differences between TD Waterhouse Bank checks and TD Canada Trust U.S. Daily Interest Chequing Account checks? |
Yes. TD Waterhouse Bank checks are drawn on TD Waterhouse Bank, which is a U.S. subsidiary of TD Bank. The checks are encoded so they can be processed through the U.S. clearing system, usually within less than 5 business days, depending on where in the U.S. your check was deposited.
TD Canada Trust U.S. Daily Interest Chequing Account checks are drawn on the TD Bank, encoded with a Canadian routing code, and may take up to 28 days to clear when deposited in the U.S.
| 5. | What happens if I mail a check in U.S. funds, drawn on a Canadian bank, to TD Waterhouse Bank for deposit? |
The check will be held for 9 business days or less. Some other U.S. banks will hold checks from outside the U.S. for up to 28 days to allow checks to clear properly.
| 6. | Are there any differences between my TD Waterhouse Bank ATM Check Card and my TD Canada Trust Access Card? |
Your TD Canada Trust Access Card can be used to get cash from Green Machines and other automated teller machines (ATMs) in Canada and can be used to pay for your purchases using Interac Direct Payment in Canada only. It can also be used to get cash around the world through ATMs in the Plus® Network.
Your TD Waterhouse Bank ATM Check Card can be used to get cash from ATMs too (through the Plus®, NYCE® and Star® networks - that's over 400,000 ATMs in the U.S.), but can't be used for Interac Direct Payment in Canada. Instead, your TD Waterhouse Bank ATM Check Card can be used to make purchases everywhere VISA cards are welcome for credit and debit purchases. It's accepted at over 12 million locations worldwide and you don't need to present ID when using it.
When using your TD Waterhouse Bank ATM Check Card to pay for your purchases at a retailer that accepts the card, some retailers require your PIN and some require your signature. To use the card at an ATM, you will need your PIN.
Unlike your TD Canada Trust Access Card, your TD Waterhouse Bank ATM Check Card can't be used to make deposits or bill payments at ATMs. Instead, you can make deposits to your account using one of the pre-printed deposit envelopes that we provide. To set up and conduct your bill payments by phone or web (available on Premier USA Account only), you can call us 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week at 1-888-327-9962.
Some ATM service providers may impose a fee directly on consumers when they use their ATMs. These fees are known as surcharges and although surcharging is rare in Canada, it is common in the U.S. TD Waterhouse Bank has no control over the surcharges imposed by other financial institutions, but to help compensate for the cost of them, we will reimburse your TD Waterhouse Bank account. For the Value USA Account the maximum is $1.00 per month. The Premier USA Account features up to a maximum of 3 rebates of $1.00 each per month.
If you use your card as a check card at a retailer which uses your PIN, you can request "cash back" to avoid the ATM surcharge.
| 8. | Am I able to use TD Waterhouse Bank electronic bill payment to pay bills from Canadian companies? |
No, you are only able to pay bills for U.S. companies with this service. However, TD Waterhouse Bank has a "pay anyone" feature so you can easily create your own payee list and pay anyone you choose in the U.S. (Available on Premier USA Account only).
| 9. | What if I am a dual citizen of Canada and the U.S.? |
If you are a resident of the U.S., your interest payments are taxable income in the U.S.
If you are a resident of Canada, in addition to the interest payments being U.S. taxable income, they are also Canadian taxable income. U.S. taxes payable in this situation may be claimed as a tax credit and/or a tax deduction on your Canadian return.
| 10. | If I am a Canadian and I open a TD Waterhouse Bank Checking Account and/or Certificate of Deposit, how are my taxes affected? |
If you are a resident of Canada, any interest paid to you should be declared on your Canadian tax return.
If you are not a resident of Canada, consult the tax authority of your country of residence about interest payments from U.S. accounts.
If you are a citizen or resident of the U.S., your interest payments are included in your United States taxable income.
If you are not a citizen or resident of the U.S., and your interest payments are not effectively connected to a U.S. trade or business, your U.S. income tax liability is not affected by the interest payments. We will send you an IRS Form W-8 BEN, Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner (the "form"). The form certifies that you are not a citizen or resident of the U.S. Please complete the form and return it to us.
