- How do I apply for a credit card online?
Simply choose the TD Visa Card you would like to apply for, and select the "Apply Now" button. You will be taken to an application page and asked to submit the necessary information and agree to the Terms and Conditions. Once complete, select "Accept" and your application has been sent for processing. You will be notified regarding the status of your application within seven to ten business days. Only Canadian residents are eligible for consideration.
- How old do you have to be to get a credit card?
An applicant has to have reached the age of majority in their province or territory of residence.
- I've just started working and don't have a credit history. Can I still apply for a credit card?
In many cases, yes. Many banks and other issuers of credit cards are willing to provide young people, including students, with a basic credit card with a low credit limit such as $500.
Responsible use of your first credit card can be a good way to start building a positive credit record.
- How are credit card interest rates determined, and how can I find out the interest rate currently being charged on a particular card?
The interest rates charged by different credit cards reflect several factors, including the bank's cost of funds and administrative costs. Changes in the interest rate charged by the Bank of Canada can affect credit card interest rates, but not as frequently as these changes affect personal loan rates. To find out the interest rate currently being charged on your credit card, just call the customer service department of the card issuer. Your monthly statement will also show the applicable interest rate for the billing period.
- How is foreign exchange calculated when I use my card outside Canada?
If you use your Account to make purchases or obtain cash advances in a currency other than Canadian Dollars, the foreign currency (if it is not already U.S. Dollars) will first be converted to U.S. Dollars and then to Canadian Dollars before it is recorded in the Account. Each currency conversion will be made at exchange rates established by VISA, which includes a conversion fee. The exchange rate that is used will be the rate on the date that a transaction is recorded in the Account and may be different from the rate in effect on the date of the transaction. For the U.S. Dollar Visa Card, purchases and cash advances in currencies other than U.S Dollars are converted in a similar manner, but to U.S. Dollars.
- Can I use my credit card to get cash from an automated banking machine (ABM)?
Most bank credit cards can be set up to enable you to use an automated banking machine (ABM). In order to use your card in an ABM, you will require a Personal Identification Number (PIN). You can obtain a PIN for a TD Visa card by visiting a TD Canada Trust branch. For the TD U.S. Dollar Visa Card, you can phone 1-877-983-1871. To use your TD Visa card in an ABM, you simply insert the Card into the machine, then key in your PIN. These withdrawals are cash advances and accrue interest from the date they are posted to your Account. Fees apply to cash advance transactions.
- I forgot my Personal Identification Number (PIN). How do I find out what it is?
As a security measure, PINs are not kept on our system. Therefore if you forget your PIN, a new one can be obtained at a TD Canada Trust branch. Please note, PINs for U.S. Dollar Visa Cards cannot be selected at a TD Canada Trust branch. If you require a PIN for your TD U.S. Dollar Visa Card, please call 1-877-983-1871.
