Introducing the security and peace of mind of chip & PIN technology

TD Visa chip Cards provide an added level of security through the use of a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The embedded computer chip stores information in a secure, encrypted format, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to copy or access the information on the Card. Cardholders will be required to enter their PIN when they make a transaction at a chip terminal (and no signature will be required), helping protect the Card from unauthorized use. Chip/PIN is part of a worldwide transition in most countries from magnetic stripe payment cards.
TD Visa has completed a successful pilot test of its new chip Cards and customers will begin receiving chip Cards nationally.
The chip in your new TD Visa Card will also allow you to use Visa payWave, a new “contactless” payment system that’s faster and more convenient than paying with cash. You can charge purchases under $25 directly to your TD Visa Card, simply by waving your Card in front of the Visa payWave terminal that you'll start to see at more and more merchants.
Chip technology requires you to use a PIN at ABMs and stores with chip terminals, the same way you do with your debit card. Your PIN is the key to using your new Card. It will become extremely important to remember your PIN, as more and more merchants begin to replace their magnetic stripe point-of-sale terminals with terminals enabled to process chip & PIN cards and the Visa payWave technology – and to keep your PIN secure and safe just like you do your Card!
See below for additional information about the new chip-enhanced TD Visa Cards. Check back regularly for updates on this nation-wide transition.
Security
Chip Cards have an embedded microchip that stores information in a secure, encrypted format.
- The microchip makes it more difficult for unauthorized users to copy or access the information on the Card.
- The chip in the Card requires you to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) when you make a credit card transaction at stores with chip technology. So, if your chip Card is lost or stolen, it can’t be used by unauthorized users (who don’t know your PIN) at stores with chip-enabled terminals.
- Do not let anyone else know or use your PIN.
- Never write it down.
- Use your hand or body to shield the keypad when you enter your PIN.
- Make transactions when and where you feel secure. If in doubt, don’t use your TD Visa Card.
- When a transaction is complete, put your Card back in your wallet and take your transaction record.
Benefits
- Your TD Visa transactions will be completed faster because in most cases you’ll no longer need to sign a transaction slip at stores with chip-enabled terminals.
- The chip in the Card requires you to enter your PIN when you make a credit card transaction at stores with chip technology. So, if your Card is lost or stolen, it can’t be used by unauthorized users (who don’t know your PIN) at stores with chip-enabled terminals.
Using chip/PIN
- When making a purchase at a store with a chip-enabled terminal, you’ll be asked to enter your PIN into a keypad instead of signing a receipt.
- No swiping: your TD Visa Card will be inserted into the terminal and left there until the transaction is complete.
- The process is similar to making a purchase with a debit card. It’s easy! Just follow the prompts.
- Insert your TD Visa Card into the store’s chip-enabled terminal and leave it there for the length of the transaction. (Sometimes the store merchant will insert the Card for you.)
- The total purchase amount will be displayed on the keypad screen.
- Enter your PIN on the keypad, making sure that no one else can see it.
- The screen will show that your transaction has been processed.
- Remove your Card from the terminal.
- Take your Card and receipt.
- If you are at a store with a chip-enabled terminal, it will prompt you to insert your TD Visa Card or the store merchant may provide direction.
- If you are making a purchase at a store without a chip-enabled terminal, you can still make purchases with your new TD Visa Card. In addition to a chip, it will also have a secure magnetic stripe like your old Card. So if you are in a store that doesn’t have a chip terminal, you can make transactions as you do now, by signing a receipt.
- Only you should know your PIN. If a merchant asks you for your PIN do not provide it to them. Ask them to pass the terminal to you so you can enter the PIN.
Places to use chip
- Chip & PIN technology is already in use worldwide, including the United Kingdom and France, and has been proven to reduce fraud.
- Various Canadian stores already use chip-enabled terminals, and over the next several years, many stores will change to this system.
- Your TD Visa Card will work outside Canada. You will be asked to sign a receipt in countries that do not have chip-enabled terminals. In countries with chip-enabled terminals, you will be asked to key in your PIN.
Authorized Users on your TD Visa Account
- Authorized Users on your TD Visa Account will receive their own TD Visa Card number with chip & PIN technology and they will have their own unique PINs.
- Statements will be broken out by who performed the transaction.
PIN Assignment & Changes
- If you forget your PIN, your TD Visa transaction may be declined.
- Select a PIN that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.
- If you need to change your PIN, simply:
- Insert your TD Visa Card into any Green Machine ABM;
- Select your current PIN;
- Enter “Change PIN” from the main menu and follow the prompts. Or simply take your TD Visa Card to any TD Canada Trust branch and ask a Customer Service Representative to help you assign a new PIN to your Card.

Online/Phone Purchases
- Online and telephone purchases will not require your PIN. You will pay for these types of purchases as you do now.
- Never give out your PIN over the phone, Internet or mail. No one but you knows your PIN – not even TD Canada Trust. Make sure you safe-guard it at all times.
Making purchases with Visa payWave
- Visa payWave contactless payment solution is secure and easy to use – a great way to speed through lines at convenience stores, coffee shops or anywhere else you make everyday purchases. Your TD Visa Card never leaves your hand.
Look for the Visa payWave symbol found on your TD Visa Card and on the merchant terminals.
- Visa payWave is generally faster than using cash. Most Visa payWave
transactions take only seconds. Simply:
- When prompted, wave your TD Visa Card in front of the merchant terminal
displaying the Visa payWave logo.
- When you hear the “beep”, you’re done! If you would like a receipt, you can request one from the merchant.

Magnetic Stripe Cards
- Your new TD Visa Card with a chip will also have a secure magnetic stripe like your old Card. So if you are in a store that doesn’t have a chip-enabled terminal, you can make transactions as you do now, by signing a receipt.
- Continue to sign the back of your TD Visa chip Card. You still will be asked to sign for purchases at terminals that are non-chip.
