Improper installation of downspouts, gutters, vents, chimneys, or air conditioners.
Improperly sealed openings such as screw fasteners or air vents.
What you can do
Have your roof inspected for cracks, breaks, and loose or missing shingles. You may be able to temporarily patch a roof with compound or sealants, but generally speaking most roofs have a shelf-life of 20 years. Newer “membrane” roofs can last up to 50 years.
Look for leaks and holes in rain gutters, downspouts and extensions.
Clear roof, gutters and downspouts (pipes where excess water flows) of debris such as leaves and dirt.
Make sure your downspouts are directed away from your home.
Make sure that screw heads and fasteners are properly covered.
Inspect and seal chimneys and air conditioning units.
