Weather-generated water, such as rain, or melting snow or ice, that seeps in.
Outside walls are not properly maintained or sealed.
What you can do
Assess glazing, weather-stripping, door and window seals, and other exterior elements for damage.
Look for water stains around windows and doors which can indicate water is penetrating the structure from the outside.
Repair or replace the weather barrier; if it’s poorly installed or maintained, it may lead to leaks. Your home’s exterior may not be resistant to water infiltration, but the weather barrier will stop water from seeping into your home. This crucial point tends to be overlooked in the construction process, and the barrier is often poorly installed.
Repair or replace caulking in these areas to improve water-tightness.
Be sure that your exterior siding is not missing screws, creating openings where water can penetrate.
Keep any source of water, such as snow, away from your home’s exterior walls.
Shut off your exterior water spout during the winter months to prevent it from freezing.
