Starting in October 2007, selected Cardholders in Kitchener-Waterloo will receive a TD Gold Select Visa Card embedded with a computer chip that provides added security through the use of a Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Soon, chip & PIN technology will be put in place for all TD Visa Cards in Canada, making a secure payment system even more secure.

  1. What is a chip Card?
    • Chip Cards have an embedded microchip that stores information in a secure, encrypted format.

  1. How does the new chip & PIN system help protect me from credit card fraud?
    • The microchip makes it more difficult for unauthorized users to copy or access the information on the Card.
    • The chip in the Card requires you to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) when you make a credit card transaction at stores with chip technology. So, if your chip Card is lost or stolen, it can’t be used by unauthorized users (who don’t know your PIN) at stores with chip-enabled terminals.

  1. Are there any other benefits?
    • Your TD Visa transactions will be completed faster because you’ll no longer need to sign a transaction slip at stores with chip-enabled terminals.

  1. What is different about a PIN transaction?
    • When making a purchase at a store with a chip-enabled terminal, you’ll be asked to enter your PIN into a keypad instead of signing a receipt.
    • No swiping: your TD Visa Card will be inserted into the terminal and left there until the transaction is complete.
    • The process is similar to making a purchase with a debit card.

  1. How do I make purchases with my new chip-enabled TD Visa Card?
  2. It’s easy! Just follow the prompts.

    1. Insert your TD Visa Card into the store’s chip-enabled terminal and leave it there for the length of the transaction. (Sometimes the store merchant will insert the Card for you.)
    2. The total purchase amount will be displayed on the keypad screen.
    3. Enter your PIN on the keypad, making sure that no one else can see it.
    4. The screen will show that your transaction has been processed.
    5. Remove your Card from the terminal.
    6. Take your Card and receipt.

  1. How should I protect my PIN?
    • Do not let anyone else know or use your PIN.
    • Never write it down.
    • Use your hand or body to shield the keypad when you enter your PIN.
    • Make transactions when and where you feel secure. If in doubt, don’t use your TD Visa Card.
    • When a transaction is complete, put your Card back in your wallet and take your transaction record.

  1. What happens if I forget my PIN?
    • If you forget your PIN, your TD Visa transaction may be declined.
    • Select a PIN that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.

  1. How do I change my PIN?
    1. Insert your TD Visa Card into any Green Machine ABM;
    2. Enter your current PIN;
    3. Select “Change PIN” from the main menu and follow the prompts.

Or simply take your TD Visa Card to any TD Canada Trust branch and ask a Customer Service Representative to help you assign a new PIN to your Card.

  1. How do I know if a store has a chip-enabled terminal?
    • The terminal will prompt you to insert your TD Visa Card or the store merchant may provide direction.

  1. How do I make a purchase at a store without a chip-enabled terminal?
    • Your new TD Visa Card with a chip will also have a secure magnetic stripe like your old Card. So if you are in a store that doesn’t have a chip-enabled terminal, you can make transactions as you do now, by signing a receipt.

  1. Where are chip Cards being used globally?
    • Chip & PIN technology is already in use in over 40 countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom and France, and has been proven to reduce fraud.
    • Various Canadian stores already use chip-enabled terminals, and over the next several years, many stores will change to this system.

  1. Will my TD Visa Card work outside Canada?
    • Yes. You will be asked to sign a receipt in countries that do not have chip-enabled terminals. In countries with chip-enabled terminals, you will be asked to key in your PIN.

  1. What happens if I make a TD Visa purchase online or by phone?
    • Online and telephone purchases will not require your PIN. You will pay for these types of purchases as you do now.
    • Never give out your PIN over the phone, Internet or mail.

  1. What if it is difficult for me to use a PIN?
    • Please call TD Visa Customer Service at 1-800-983-8472 and find out how we can help.

  1. How does this affect other Cardholders on my TD Visa Account?
    • They will receive their own TD Visa Cards with chip & PIN technology and their own unique PINs.

  1. How can I request a TD Visa chip Card?
    • The transition to chip & PIN technology will take place over several years. You will receive notification closer to the time your Card will be affected by this development. Magnetic stripe Cards are still secure, and will be accepted at all store locations – whether that store location has a chip-enabled terminal or not.
