Paying for School

Paying for your undergraduate studies

The costs of earning your undergrad or college degree can quickly add up, so explore your payment options up front.

A good place to start is with scholarships, bursaries and loans. If you haven’t already done so, check with your university or college for any scholarships and bursaries that you may be eligible for as a new or returning student.

Paying for education: Put your bank to work for you

Your bank can provide sound advice so ask them to do some of the legwork. At TD Canada Trust, we understand how the costs of tuition, books, rent and everyday needs can really add up.

When it comes to paying for education, we are here to help in more ways than you may think:

TD Canada Trust Student Line of Credit

Find out how a TD Canada Trust Student Line of Credit can help pay for education. You can use the funds for anything — tuition, rent, groceries and supplies. Your line of credit is accessible when you need it, via any Green Machine ABM, Interac, EasyWeb Internet banking, EasyLine telephone banking, free cheques and at any branch.1

As a full-time undergraduate university and college student, you may qualify for a credit line of up to $10,000 a year for a maximum of $40,000. Part-time students are eligible for half that amount. Plus, the TD Canada Trust Student Line of Credit allows you to make interest-only payments while in school and up to 12 months after you finish or leave school.

Tips for using your Student Line of Credit

Here’s how to make the most of your Student Line of Credit:

  • Emergency access. By adding your Student Line of Credit to your TD Canada Trust Access Card, you’ll be able to withdraw cash whenever you need it or make a purchase using Interac online or direct payment.2
  • Protect your credit rating. Make your interest payments by the due date on your Student Line of Credit. That way you’ll graduate with a stronger credit rating — a big help when you apply for a mortgage or loan in the future.
  • Use a pre-authorized payment plan. Ensure you never miss a payment on your Student Line of Credit, by having money transfered automatically from your chequing account.
  • Pay it down when you can. If you have the money, you can pay your Student Line of Credit at any time without penalty and save on interest.
  • Take advantage of the lower interest rate. It may be wise to pay off any credit cards (which come with a higher interest rate) with your Student Line of Credit to save money.

Be wise about managing debt

You may be just starting your career or in your first job, and thinking about starting to pay off your student loans. It’s helpful to keep in mind that your branch can help you develop a plan that will balance paying down your school debt and saving for your future.
