Credit Cards

Credit Cards A credit card card is a convenient way to make day-to-day purchases without using cash. Having a credit card issued by a Canadian bank can also be a good way to start building a positive credit record in Canada, which is necessary if you want or need to borrow money in the future (for example, to buy a family home or pay for a child's education).

TD Canada Trust offers a choice of credit cards, including several with no annual fee or a low annual fee, and many with rewards. As a newcomer to Canada, you may need to apply for a secured credit card, which can be a great option for some new immigrants to start building a personal credit rating in Canada.

Once you have established a Canadian credit rating, which demonstrates your ability to manage personal credit, you may be eligible to apply for an unsecured credit card.

TD Canada Trust offers a wide selection of credit cards, including:

  • credit cards with a low annual fee or no annual fee;
  • credit cards for travellers that allow you to earn points on purchases that you can then redeem for travel savings on flights, hotels and much more;
  • credit cards that offer cash rebates on your purchases;
  • a credit card with a preferred variable interest rate, offering competitive low rates

A credit card allows the cardholder to charge purchases rather than pay cash or debit their account. Usually, there is a time period when no interest is charged on the amount, as long as the balance is paid in full by the due date on the cardholder’s monthly statement. If the balance is not paid in full, interest is charged to the cardholder. You can use a credit card to spend up to the amount of the credit limit available to you, whenever you need it.

A credit card for which the cardholder is required to provide a cash deposit or other cash-like asset as security against the risk of defaulting on payments. You can then use the credit card to spend up to the amount of your credit limit (which will be the amount of your cash deposit or other asset) whenever you need it. Secured credit cards are sometimes required for cardholders who have no previous credit history in Canada.

A credit card for which the cardholder is not required to provide a cash deposit or other cash-like asset as security against the risk of defaulting on payments. Typically, cardholders with a previous credit history in Canada will not be required to provide any security (a cash deposit or other cash-like asset) before they are issued a credit card.
