3. What file formats are available for price history downloading?

Quicken Price History Format
This is a file format that is specifically designed to be used with Quicken. This format allows you to download the price histories of specific funds directly into your personal Quicken ledgers.

Note: Quicken has two import formats-one is the QIF format and one is Price History. The format available for download here is the Price History format which will be marked with the extension ".QHS" and is not the other format which is marked with a ".qif" extension.

CSV (Comma Separated Value)
This is a simple text format that separates the data using commas so that it can be easily loaded into any spread sheet application that supports CSV file format such as Microsoft Excel. Do not use this format with Quicken, as this particular CSV format will not work with the program.

DIF (Data Interchange Format)
This file is also a standard text format file much like CSV, that allows you to load data into specific areas of an applications such as MS Excel, Lotus 1,2,3. and any other PC or any Mainframe application that supports the DIF file format. The format allows you to chose some more sophisticated criteria for the separation of data into the individual cells of the spreadsheet.

SLK (Symbolic Link Format)
This file format also saves as a standard text format much like CSV and DIF, which allow you to load data into specific areas of applications such as MS Excel, Lotus 1,2,3 and any other PC or Mainframe application that support the SLK format. This format allows you not only to choose more sophisticated criteria for the separation of data, but also allows you to embed information into the file that defines the layout of the spread sheet and the formatting of the display.

For more information on the specific uses of these file formats within individual applications, please check your user manuals for file format information.

4. How do I download files with my browser?

Netscape Users:

Select the Funds and date you range you require and then pick your desired file format. Press the download button and, when prompted by your browser, save the files to a local directory on your hard drive. Netscape will automatically attach the correct file extension to the file (i.e. .CSV for comma Separated Value etc.).

If the file type being downloaded is already defined and an associated application indicated in the OPTIONS | GENERAL PREFERENCES | HELPERS section, then the application will launch (such as Excel) and open the file. Please note you cannot set up your browser to automatically open the Quicken History Files (.qhs) using Quicken. You must save the file locally on your hard drive and then import it into Quicken following procedures described below. You may save the file under any name you wish but don't change the file extension.

Microsoft Explorer Users:

Select the Funds and date you range you require and then pick your desired file format. Press the download button and, when prompted by your browser, save the files to a local directory on your hard drive. Explorer will attach the correct file extension to the file (i.e. .CSV for comma Separated Value etc.) only if that file type is set up in the VIEW | OPTIONS | PROGRAMS | FILE TYPES area. If it is not defined - Explorer will attach a random file extension. To check if a given file type is defined, scroll through the list in VIEW | OPTIONS | PROGRAMS | FILE TYPES (.SLK , .DIF and .CSV are often defined as Excel file types if Excel is installed on your system.).

To define a new file type, go to VIEW | OPTIONS | PROGRAMS | FILE TYPES and NEW TYPE . Name the type in the DESCRIPTION BOX, indicate the file extension in the ASSOCIATED EXTENSION BOX, in the CONTENT TYPE (MIME) input application/file extension. Select the same file extension as the DEFAULT.

For example, for the Quicken history files:

Description Quicken History File
Associated Extension: qhs
Content Type (MIME): application/qhs
Default file Extension: qhs

If the file type being downloaded is already defined in the VIEW | OPTIONS | PROGRAMS | FILE TYPES section and you requested a specific application to open the file in the available options, then the appropriate application may launch (such as Excel) to open the file. Please note you cannot set up your browser to automatically open the Quicken History Files (.qhs) using Quicken. You must save the file locally on your hard drive and then import it into Quicken following procedures described below. You may save the file under any name you wish but don't change the file extension.

5. How do I import the TD Mutual Fund price files into Quicken?

Quicken can only import price files downloaded in the "Quicken Import Price History Format". The file will have a .qhs file extension. The CSV format used in this download facility will NOT work with Quicken. We have successfully imported files into Quicken on Windows 95 and Windows 3.1. We have not been able to import on Windows NT. We are currently researching an approach for Windows NT users - we will place a notice on the website when we can resolve this issue.

Start by creating a new security for the TD Mutual Fund in the Investment Portfolio section in Quicken. It is very important that you use the correct symbol for the fund - it must match what is being imported. To get the correct symbol - simply view the file using the "Display File" option from the pull down menu in the download area. Be sure to exactly match the symbol. The name you selected for the file when you downloaded can be any name as long as you do not change the file extension.

From the View Portfolio Screen in the Investment section, select FILE | FILE OPERATIONS | IMPORT PRICES and key in the path and correct filename for the file you saved. The default date for the dialog box is today's date which will work for any historical data. Press enter and Quicken should update the prices for the Fund.
