How it works

How does it work?
Once you have registered for the Interac Email Money Transfer service, you can send money to anyone with an email address and a personal bank account at a Canadian financial institution. Here's how it works.

  1. Add Recipient
Add the name and email address of the recipient (the person who will receive money) to your personal Recipient List. You will also create a Security Question and Answer specific to that recipient.

  2. Send Money
Follow the steps to send an Interac Email Money Transfer. You will receive a confirmation number and the money will be withdrawn immediately from your TD Canada Trust account.

An email will be sent to the recipient notifying him/her of the incoming transfer and instructions to collect the money.

  3. Receive Money
To receive the money, the recipient must read their email notification and follow the instructions.

If the recipient collects the money through online banking with a participating financial institution the transfer takes place immediately. At this time, the participating financial institutions include BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, RBC Royal Bank, Scotiabank and TD Canada Trust.

Alternatively, the recipient can collect an Interac Email Money Transfer using the CertaPay Transfer site. The recipient provides direction to deposit the money to their bank account using an electronic transfer. It will take 3 - 5 business days to process the deposit and a service fee may be deducted by CertaPay.

To collect the Interac Email Money Transfer, the recipient must correctly answer the Security Question.

  4. Completed Transfer
Once the recipient has deposited the money into their bank account, you (the sender) will receive an email to confirm the completion of the transfer.
